Our History
The providential history of the rise and establishment of the first Seventh-day Adventist Church in Konnarock Virginia
1927-Present
The Konnarock Seventh-day Adventist Church was organized in 1927 with 50 members by Pastor William 0. Berry. The land for construction of the first church facility - the Rock Church - was donated that same year and the church was constructed out of local stone on Rhymer Road.
The Rock Church
It was first occupied in 1928 on a knoll above the main road leading into Konnarock in plain sight of the road as well as the railroad. For the first year, the congregation sat on folding chairs but perwes were added by the end of that year. As the church attracted more members with children there was an urgent need for a church school. In September of 1931, the first church school opened with 43 students and at least 15 more students who wanted to attend. But there was no more room as the first school met in a building that had formerly been a private residence. George P Brownell, the first teacher, helped to oversee the construction of a new school building on a donated lot on Rhymer Road just down the street from the Rock Church. By the beginning of the second school year in 1932, the students had a brand new facility with a teachers' cottage across the street! This church school served the congregation until it closed in 1996. Both the original Rock Church facility and the Wooden Church School were sold and turned into private residences and still exist on Rhymer Road today.
Growing Pains
Early in the 60's the membership in the rock Church was bursting at the scams and the need for a new church was critical. But finances were tight and it was decided that the church family would now move to the school buildings as their new church home. A room was added for the children and new oil furnace installed with a new roof. Church and school met in the structure until 1996 when the new brick church was built and occupied in its present location.
